One-armed spiral instability in neutron star mergers and its detectability in gravitational waves

چکیده
We study the development and saturation of them 1⁄4 1 one-armed spiral instability in remnants of binary neutron star mergers by means of high-resolution long-term numerical relativity simulations. Our results suggest that this instability is a generic outcome of neutron star mergers in astrophysically relevant configurations, including both “stiff” and “soft” nuclear equations of state. We find that, once seeded at merger, them 1⁄4 1mode saturates within ∼10 ms and persists over secular time scales. Gravitational waves emitted by them 1⁄4 1 instability have a peak frequency around 1–2 kHz and, if detected, they could be used to constrain the equation of state of neutron stars. We construct hybrid waveforms spanning the entire Advanced LIGO band by combining our high-resolution numerical data with state-of-the-art effective-onebody waveforms including tidal effects. We use the complete hybrid waveforms to study the detectability of the one-armed spiral instability for both Advanced LIGO and the Einstein Telescope. We conclude that the one-armed spiral instability is not an efficient gravitational wave emitter. Even under very optimistic assumptions, Advanced LIGO will only be able to detect the one-armed instability up to ∼3 Mpc, which corresponds to an event rate of 10−7 yr−1 to 10−4 yr−1. Third-generation detectors or better will likely be required to observe the one-armed instability.

متن کاملOne-armed Spiral Instability in a Slowly Rotating, Post-bounce Supernova Core
A three-dimensional, Newtonian hydrodynamical technique is used to follow the post-bounce phase of a stellar core collapse event. For realistic initial data we have employed post core-bounce snapshots of the iron core of a 20 M⊙ star from the study of Ott et al. (2004). The models exhibit strong differential rotation, but have centrally condensed density stratifications. We demonstrate for the ...
متن کاملThe R-mode Instability in Rotating Neutron Stars
In this review we summarize the current understanding of the gravitational-wave driven instability associated with the so-called r-modes in rotating neutron stars. We discuss the nature of the r-modes, the detailed mechanics of the instability and its potential astrophysical significance. In particular we discuss results regarding the spin-evolution of nascent neutron stars, the detectability o...
متن کاملThe Bar-mode Instability in Differentially Rotating Neutron Stars: Simulations in Full General Relativity
We study the dynamical stability against bar-mode deformation of rapidly spinning neutron stars with differential rotation. We perform fully relativistic 3D simulations of compact stars with M/R ≥ 0.1, where M is the total gravitational mass and R the equatorial circumferential radius. We adopt an adiabatic equation of state with adiabatic index Γ = 2. As in Newtonian theory, we find that stars...
متن کاملThe gravitational wave ‘probability event horizon’ for double neutron star mergers
Gravitational waves generated by the final merger of double neutron star (DNS) binary systems are a key target for the gravitational wave (GW) interferometric detectors, such as LIGO, and the next generation detectors, Advanced LIGO. The cumulative GW signal from DNS mergers in interferometric data will manifest as ‘geometrical noise’: a non-continuous stochastic background with a unique statis...
